- Increased efficiency
- Low implementation costs for high performance increases
- Developing a collaborative mindset among employees
3 easy steps to introduce 5S in your workplace
Step 1: Develop a plan
Go through each step of the 5S and make it a habit to do the following as you plan:
- Visualize workplace
- Look for the superfluous
- Find the root cause of each problem
- develop standards
- Repeat process
Step 2: Get active
Introduce 5S into your organization by assigning a trained employee or an entire team to carry out the following on a weekly basis:
- Take a picture of the current state of the workplace.
- Sort items into needed and superfluous. Determine frequency of use of an item (daily, monthly or never) and check whether it is still necessary or defective or obsolete.
- Organize and group items by use and function. You can also add labels and introduce a color coding system for easy sorting.
- Clean up the workplace. Eliminate objects that make dirt, dirt or grime.
- Conduct inspections to identify items that could not be attended to that day, including items that are proving difficult to classify or that should be removed. Create a plan of action (e.g. sell, donate, recycle, or throw away) for items to be removed.
- For verification purposes, a photo should be taken of the workplace after making any changes.
Step 3: Monitor
As one of the key principles of Kaizen, every area or plant manager should conduct a monthly and quarterly inspection to ensure 5S standards are being met. Regular inspections also help keep track of items and equipment so you can identify when they need repairs or are missing something.
